Chevy Equinox P0456: EVAP System Leak Detected (Very Small Leak)

Chevy Equinox P0456 Small EVAP Leak Diagnosis

Quick Answer: What is P0456?

On a Chevy Equinox, the P0456 code means the PCM has detected a microscopic leak (less than 0.020 inches) in the fuel vapor recovery system. In 70% of Equinox cases, this is caused by a faulty EVAP Purge Valve that isn't closing 100%, or a worn gas cap seal.

Note: While this code does not affect engine performance, it will disable your Remote Start feature. It also prevents you from passing state emissions testing until the code is cleared and the system has completed its self-test.

Common Symptoms

Most Likely Causes

  1. Faulty Purge Valve (60%): The solenoid under the hood sticks open slightly, allowing a tiny amount of vacuum to pull from the tank.
  2. Worn Gas Cap (25%): The rubber O-ring is dry-rotted or flattened.
  3. Cracked Charcoal Canister: The plastic housing located under the rear of the vehicle has a hairline crack.
  4. Damaged Vapor Lines: Small rubber hoses that have become brittle with age.

Detailed Repair Cost Breakdown

Estimates for Chevy Equinox (2.4L and 3.6L) in the US market:

Component / Task Aftermarket Part OEM ACDelco Part Labor Time
EVAP Purge Valve Solenoid $35 - $55 $75 - $110 0.5 hr (Easy DIY)
Gas Cap $15 - $25 $35 - $50 0.0 hr (DIY)

How to Fix P0456 on a Chevy Equinox

1. The Purge Valve "Suction" Test

Locate the purge valve solenoid on top of the engine. Disconnect the vacuum line that goes back to the fuel tank. With the engine running and the electrical connector disconnected, put your finger over the port. If you feel any suction, the valve is leaking and is the 100% cause of your P0456. This is the most common fix for the Equinox.

2. Inspect the Gas Cap Seal

Remove the gas cap and look closely at the black rubber ring. If you see tiny white hairline cracks or if the rubber feels stiff, buy a Genuine ACDelco cap. Equinox sensors are very sensitive; cheap aftermarket caps often don't seal tightly enough, causing the code to return.

3. Smoke Test Diagnostic

If the valve and cap are good, a microscopic leak is impossible to find visually. Take the SUV to a shop for a smoke test. They will pump harmless smoke into the system; wherever the smoke billows out (like a tiny hole on top of the gas tank or a charcoal canister seam), that is your leak. Most US shops charge $100 for this test.
